Prespes’ Beans

February 21, 2011

Prespes’ beans, a PGI product, come in two sizes, giants and elephants named so according to their size. They have high nutritional value and fully conform to the healthy Mediterranean diet philosophy.

The Prespes’ beans’ taste is very special due to the microclimate and soil composition of Florina’s region in which they are cultivated. From 1994 till 2009, Prespes’ beans were characterised as products with Protected Designation of Origin, PDO.

On May 28th 2009 however their classification has been upgraded and they have been included in the official list of products with Protected Geographical Indication, PGI.

Since then, Prespes’ beans have been packaged exclusively within the boundaries of their production zone, in the adjoining agricultural regions of the communities: Microlimnis, Karyon, LefkonosPlateous, Lemou, Ay. Germanou, Ay. Achilliou, Vronderou and Kalitheas.

Cooked in a soup, baked in the oven or added to salads, Florina’s beans offer their characteristic fragrance and flavor to not just the Greek winter but any winter.
