The IX Barcelona International Conference on Mediterranean Diet will take place in Barcelona, Spain during the 27th -28th of March 2012. The theme of the conference is: ‘’A healthy lifestyle for Obesity Prevention’’. The healthy lifestyle is the one facilitated by the Med diet. This event is organized by the Mediterranean Diet Foundation (Fountación Dieta Mediterranea), FDM, which is based in Barcelona. The FDM is a foundation dedicated and committed for the promotion of the Mediterranean Diet, Med diet.
The conference will take place at Fira de Barcelona and will be in parallel with the Food and Beverage exhibition 2012 organized by the Alimentaria Hub. During the two day conference there will be a number of presentations where the results of the new studies and research will be presented so that the audience will get updated about the Mediterranean diet status and success. In addition the presenters will have presentations about the evolution of knowledge on Mediterranean diet. The third aspect of the conference, that will take place the second day, will be a discussion about the new and more effective ways of spreading the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
During the Mediterranean diet conference, apart from the plenary and keynote speeches, there will be a total of 6 sessions with the following themes:
- Genetics and lifestyle
- Obesity, causes and trends
- Mediterranean Diet and Obesity
- Social, Psychological and Behaviour aspects
- Obesity Prevention Environments and
- Nutrition Policy
The theme of the discussion will be on how the Mediterranean Diet will be presented: Pyramid Vs Plate. The plate presentation form is the way the US government institutions present the diet composition so that it is more understandable by the people. The pyramid has been presented in its inverted form by us, since we believe that it denotes the importance of the most frequently/daily Mediterranean foods by having them on top of the inverted pyramid.
One of parameters which give prestige to a conference is the person who will chair the conference. The conference will be chaired by Dr Jose Maria Ordovas who is a professor of Nutrition at Tufts University of Boston, Mass, USA. Dr Ordovas is well known and a pioneer in the disciplines of nutrigenetics and nutrigenimics. He is the director in a few renowned institutions and laboratories both in USA and in Spain.
The registration cost for the conference is 150 Euros for the general public.
